For a lot of people, prayer is an important part of life. But for many of us, when we pray, it may sometimes become routine. When we do it, we think that God can answer our prayers, and we think He might answer our prayers. We may not expect that He will answer them, though.
So many of us profess to believe that His word is true, from “Holy Bible on the front, to Bonded Leather on the back,” as one country preacher we knew used to say. But if we do believe it’s true, I think we need to come back to His promises and remember them when we seek Him and when we pray. Keep in mind promises like this one:
“Trust in the Lord and do what is good; dwell in the land and live securely. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act, making your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like the noonday.” Psalm 37:3-6 (HCSB)
What are we called to do?
TRUST is mentioned twice. Are we trusting that He will answer our prayers? Are we trusting that all things really work together for good who love Him? (Romans 8:28)
TAKE DELIGHT – We are told here that if we take delight in Him, He will give us our heart’s desires. Of course, if we take delight in Him, our heart’s desires will probably be quite a bit different from normal! Are we taking delight in Him?
COMMIT YOUR WAY TO THE LORD – This one is tough sometimes, isn’t it? We like to think we have things together and have things figured out pretty well. Ultimately, though, we need to put our way into His hands. “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps,” Proverbs 16:9 tells us. Sometimes, we just need to let go of trying to control our lives, commit our way to Him, and let Him work.
My prayer tonight is that we all can trust Him, and in doing so, we will find delight in Him, surrendering our will to His, and committing our way to Him.
Lord, please lead us.
